Grow for Talgarth

Grow for Talgarth (GfT)  is the small but enthusiastic group of local volunteers who tend the many flower beds and boxes that make Talgarth look so vibrant. In addition to planting, weeding and watering, we have repainted benches, lamp posts, gates and many feet of railings in and around the centre of the town. We have also organised litter picking and pavement cleaning all to enhance our lovely town.

Last year we entered Wales in Bloom for the first time and were absolutely delighted to win Silver Gilt in our category. To everyone who helped us in 2019 we would like to extend our very grateful thanks – not only to Talgarth’s wonderful residents but also to the many local businesses and organisations who supported us.

Encouraged by our success we now intend to enter Wales in Bloom 2020. During the winter months we have had several planning meetings. We will maintain the existing boxes around Talgarth Square and along the river, the beds of perennials alongside the Town Hall and the Riverside Garden.

For 2020, we will extend our route and include even more local groups, such as the Church Hall, Ashburnham House and the Bowls Club. The small team of gardeners at the splendid Mill Garden will once again be part of the judging route.

Our entry for 2019 included, amongst other areas, a Leaf Garden, a Berry Garden and a large Flower Garden. This year we plan to add a Conifer Garden and an Alpine Garden to our route.

We meet every Wednesday afternoon and Sunday morning for a couple of hours of gardening, painting  and street sweeping – often ending with a coffee and a chat. No experience is needed and you don’t have to come to every session!

But it’s not all work! Our successful fundraising team has already organised a social dinner, a Gardeners’ Question Time event, two local choir concerts plus a Quiz Night and an Open Gardens Day … and that’s just for the first half of 2020.
